Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - With the COVID-19 pandemic, how do I know if I should get tested and where do I go?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about where to get tested if you’re experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, how do I know if I should get tested and where do I go?

If you’ve traveled recently or have been exposed to someone that has recently traveled or tested positive for COVID-19, start with a self-assessment listed on Peel Public Health’s website.

You will likely be assessed for testing, if in the last 14 days:

  • You have a fever or cough or shortness of breath; and

  • Have traveled outside of Canada, or

  • You have had close contact with a sick person who has travelled outside of Canada

You will not be tested if:

  • You do not have any symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough or shortness of breath)

  • You have no known exposure, such as close contact

If you have answered yes to these questions, you should seek clinical assessment for COVID-19 over the phone by contacting your primary care provider (for example, family doctor). Let them know that you have used this self-assessment tool.

You can also contact Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 and speak with a registered nurse. Let them know that you have done a self-assessment.

If you start to experience worsening symptoms, please visit your local emergency department. Call before you go and let them know you have used this self-assessment tool.

If you are having difficulty breathing or experiencing other severe symptoms, call 911 immediately.
