This week’s question is about changing the layout of an ensuite bathroom.

Is it difficult to change the layout of my ensuite bathroom?

To make a long answer short, not entirely difficult, but there are some considerations.

Whenever we meet a client  for a bathroom renovation, the first thing we ask is “what is directly below us?”  We ask this because what’s below will affect the complexity of changing the layout as most of the drains will run through the floor. We don’t worry so much about the water supply lines, as they are under pressure and can be run in any direction. But water is gravity fed and requires a slope in order to drain efficiently. That is why they tend to run below the floors.

When you’re relocating drains, such as a toilet or shower, you will either end up running in the direction of the joist, or opposed to them. If you are fortunate to follow the joists, then a reconfiguration shouldn’t be too difficult. But If you have to run opposed to them, you will most likely end up with bulkheads in the ceiling below, which could present its own challenges, such as passing over top cabinets or in a living/dining room. If you happen to be over a laundry room, then you have less to worry about, aesthetically. Typically we try to follow the directions of the joists. Regardless, take your time in planning and try to be flexible as your first design might not be feasible.
