Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - I’m worried about my elderly parents being alone for the holiday season. What can I do to keep them safe and support their mental health?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.
Today’s question is about older adult safety during the holidays.

I’m worried about my elderly parents being alone for the holiday season. What can I do to keep them safe and support their mental health?

Celebrate the holidays with extended family virtually this year. Although Peel Public Health recommends older adults stay home and rely on family and social supports as much as possible for essential needs, there are many ways to help keep older adults safe and support their mental health this holiday season including:

·         Not visiting in-person, unless you’re an essential support or caregiver to prevent the spread of COVID-19

·         Checking in virtually daily or weekly to chat

·         Encouraging your family member to keep active using free online videos, workouts and other resources

When celebrating with extended family virtually this year, remind your family members of the actions they can take to prevent accidently causing a fire in their home. Some holiday fire prevention tips include:

·         Keeping watch over the stove and staying in the kitchen while cooking. Don’t forget to turn off the stove when finished.

·         Turning off all holiday lights when heading to bed or leaving the house.

·         Choosing battery operated lights and candles. If choosing to light real candles, make sure they

·         Keeping space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, like curtains, furniture or holiday decorations.

·         Checking the cords of all indoor and outdoor lights. Discard any damaged, frayed or worn cords or wiring.
